Garden Suburb Infant School

Our New Bikes!

We were very lucky to receive a grant from The Hampstead Garden Trust, along with fundraising from our PTA. to add to our stock of playground bikes.

As a school, a key part of our ethos is centred around teaching our children to lead a healthy lifestyle, with respect for their environment. We have a GOLD standard School Travel Plan which is focused on encouraging sustainable travel, with fewer cars on the road, and our school also has a Gold Healthy Schools award. We provide scooter and bike storage, for those children who are able to bike or scoot to school, and we organise special days such as “Bling your Bike and Sparkle your Scooter Day”

We recognise that not all children have access to bikes or scooters, or the opportunity to practise their skills. We think it is important that all children are supported to develop their cycling skills. We therefore provide a range of bikes that the children can ride around our playground roadway everyday at school, supporting road awareness skills and safety, as well as cycling. Our range of bikes support a progression of skills, including trikes, two seater chariots for collaborative play, balance bikes, and pedal bikes, as well as scooters.

The grant that we received enabled us to buy more balance bikes, and two-wheel pedal bikes, as well as some fun taxi/chariot bikes for a bit of collaborative play! Every child in the school has access to these at breaktimes.

Have a look at Elara below, and see how she is becoming more resilient and developing her skills! She really is very determined to learn to ride a two-wheeler!
